Magento to Shopify Migration FAQ
When store owners start exploring a Magento to Shopify migration, a few practical questions usually come up. How long will the move take? How much will it cost? How will my store's functionality and design be migrated? Will it impact SEO rankings? Below are answers to the questions we hear most from your business owners, just like you, when they plan to move from Magento to Shopify.
Is Shopify better than Magento for ecommerce?
+The answer varies from business to business. Both platforms are powerful ecommerce systems, but they work in different ways.
Magento has a flexible architecture and deep control. So, stores that require heavy customization or complex architecture prefer the platform. Downside? Store owners are responsible for managing the hosting, ongoing Magento extension, and platform upgrades. Shopify simplifies all of it. They handle all heavy lifting for the platform maintenance and upkeep. So, most stores that decide to move from Magento to Shopify choose the platform for its simplicity and lower maintenance headaches.
Why do businesses migrate from Magento to Shopify?
+For many companies, the change usually comes down to how much effort it takes to run the store.
Magento is powerful and flexible. But that often means headaches for business owners in managing hosting, security patches, extensions, and ongoing development work. Eight of ten business owners move away from Magento due to its never-ending platform updates and mounting bills for technical upkeep.
Shopify removes much of that burden. Hosting, updates, and platform maintenance are handled by Shopify itself. Because of that, businesses often decide to move when they want a store that’s easier to manage while still supporting the features needed to grow their ecommerce business.
How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take?
+The timeline varies from store to store. Some stores have a small catalog and standard functionality. Others have thousands of products, customers, and complex functionality in place. But for most Magento to Shopify migration projects, it takes 6 to 10 weeks.
For Magento stores with a relatively small and straightforward catalog, the move is quicker. However, for larger Magento stores with thousands of SKUs, extensions, integrations, or complex product attributes usually require more planning and testing.
The work normally happens in a few stages: reviewing the existing Magento setup, rebuilding the key features in Shopify, transferring and verifying the store data, setting up redirects for SEO, and testing checkout and payments before launch.
How much does a Magento to Shopify migration cost?
+The cost of a Magento to Shopify migration varies based on how the current Magento store is built.
Magento environments frequently include extensions, custom pricing logic, integrations, and complex catalog attributes that must be adapted to Shopify’s framework. The more functionality that needs to be recreated or integrated, the broader the migration scope becomes.

When migrating from Magento to Shopify, do customer passwords transfer?
+No. When moving from Magento to Shopify, customer passwords cannot be transferred
Shopify doesn’t allow migrating any encrypted data. During a Magento to Shopify migration, customer accounts, order history, and profile details can all be transferred, but password data must remain protected.
After the migration, customers simply create a new password the first time they log in to the Shopify store. As part of every migration project, we work with businesses to prepare communication to notify customers ahead of launch. So, customers know exactly what to expect and how to reset the password to access their accounts on the new Shopify store.
Can you migrate Magento to Shopify without losing data?
+Yes. In most cases, the core store data moves across without problems when the migration is handled properly.
A standard Magento to Shopify migration includes products, variants, customers, and past orders. These records are transferred into Shopify so the catalog and customer history remain intact.
Data issues usually appear when exports are handled manually or when the Magento catalog structure isn’t reviewed first. Magento stores often contain product attributes, category relationships, and extensions that need to be mapped correctly before the transfer.
Once the data migration is completed, our team reviews the new Shopify store in detail. We review and ensure all products, collections, SEO, and orders have landed where they should.
Do I need Shopify Plus when migrating from Magento?
+Not always. A lot of businesses moving from Magento to Shopify run perfectly well on Shopify’s standard plans.
Shopify Plus is required when the store handles very high order volumes, has customized checkout, or needs other advanced automation or B2B capabilities. For a lot of mid-sized stores, the regular Shopify plans provide everything needed to run the business.
The right plan usually becomes clear during the planning stage of the Magento to Shopify migration. Once we review the catalog size, integrations, and operational needs, it’s easier to decide whether Shopify Plus is required or if a standard Shopify plan will be sufficient.
Will my Magento store design look the same on Shopify?
+It can look very similar, but it won’t be a direct copy.
Magento themes can’t be moved over to Shopify because the two platforms use different theme systems. As we move your store from Magento to Shopify, we recreate the design using a Shopify theme and make it as close as possible to your current design.
That said, the layout, colors, branding, and overall look of the store can still be matched closely. Some businesses keep the same visual style so the store feels familiar to customers. Others use the move as a chance to refresh the design, improve page speed, and make the site work better on mobile.
